Plasma Therapy : How Is It Being Used In Coronavirus Treatment?
Human blood consists of Red Blood Cells (RBCs), White Blood Cells (WBCs), Platelets, and Plasma. Plasma is the liquid part of the blood. Plasma helps in making antibodies when a virus enters the body. When a virus such as corona enters our body, antibodies are made automatically within to fight it. The biggest role in doing so is of the plasma present in the blood.
Plasma therapy involves the removal of plasma from the blood of individuals who have been relieved of corona infection. The removed plasma is then offered to another infected patient. In fact, a person who has been cured of infection develops immunity against the virus and after three weeks, it can be given to an infected person in the form of plasma to increase the immunity of the infected person's body.
Blood is taken out of the person who is cured of the infection. 400ml of plasma can be removed from the body of a person who is cured of infection at one time. This 400ml plasma can be further given to two infected patients.
Whenever a person suffers from a disease caused by a virus. The immune system of the person starts fighting the virus. The B-Lymphocytes (B-Cells) (a type of White Blood Cells i.e.WBCs) present in our blood start producing antibodies to fight the virus. Antibodies are proteins that can destroy or eliminate the virus. If those antibodies are offered to a patient through the plasma, then that antibody upon reaching the blood of the infected patient undergoes unicellular reproduction to form tons of its copies. These antibodies now can kill the virus present in the infected person's body.
Plasma therapy is not a new therapy. Doctors believe that it is a dominant therapy that has proved to be beneficial and has been used in many viral infections. Many countries are using this technique to fight the Novel Coronavirus (COVID-19).
